Yes, our lives are controlled by the System, the outgrowth of a computer game expanded to the real world, and, yes, all our actions, emotions, and biological processes are monitored by an electronic police force called the Witness, which can detect when we are soon to experience a health crisis or commit a crime as well as how we feel about various public issues. The world of near-future Britain has become a total surveillance state, but this Big Brother isn’t evil, or so we want to believe. The notions of apocalypse and postapocalypse have been key ingredients in all of Harkaway’s previous novels, but here he takes them in an altogether new direction, both thematically and narratively. With every new novel, Harkaway manages to further explode the idea of boundaries as useful tools to contain our understanding of character, genre, and story. Unfortunately, I did not find this book as accessible as 'Beyond Good and Evil'. As Nietzsche was an intellectual juggernaut and influential historical contributor to this sort of thinking, his attacks are worth becoming familiar with. There will always be crusaders wielding contemptuous sarcasm and cynicism to destroy established ideas. Translation: Thomas Common - revised and updated. Thus Spoke Zarathustra is a challenging text, but once encountered and absorbed, it cannot be forgotten for both its content and style. Though tarnished somewhat by inappropriate adoption by the Nazi movement in the mid-20th century, Zarathustra remains an immensely important and influential work, particularly as it exhorts the individual to question standard conventions of society in order to pursue a truly ethical and spiritual path.Īfter 10 years in solitude in the mountains, Zarathustra decides it is time to return to the world so that people can benefit from the fruits of his pondering: 'I would like to bestow and distribute, until the wise have once more become joyous in their folly, and the poor happy in their riches.' He cast it in the form of a novel in the hope that his urgent message of the 'death of God' and the rise of the superman (Ubermensch) would have greater emotional as well as intellectual impact. It was written by Friedrich Nietzsche between 18. Thus Spoke Zarathustra is one of the most extraordinary - and important - texts in Western philosophy. Kissinger now argues, in the long-delayed third volume of his memoirs, Years of Renewal, that he was prevented and distracted, by Watergate and the meltdown of the Nixon presidency, from taking an interest in the crucial triangle of force between Greece, Turkey and Cyprus. It is a pose, furthermore, which he often adopts at precisely the time when the record shows him to be knowledgeable, and when knowledge or foreknowledge would confront him with charges of responsibility or complicity. No doubt this pose costs him some self-esteem. But there are a number of occasions when it suits him to pose as a sort of Candide: naive, ill- prepared for and easily unhorsed by events. In most of his writing about himself, Kissinger projects a strong impression of a man at home in the world and on top of his brief. If you haven’t read it, you can find a link to the short story here and my analysis below. Thus, I hope this will be helpful for those trying to unravel “Young Goodman Brown.” There’s entry points for even those that are new to dissecting short stories, but it still has some difficult elements such as some of the language Hawthorne uses or grappling with some of the larger themes regarding Puritan hypocrisy. It’s a story that’s simultaneously easy and tricky to analyze. “Young Goodman Brown” is sometimes used at the beginning of the school year to introduce high school students to literary analysis. For my first post in ages, I wanted to present an analysis of Hawthorne’s “Young Goodman Brown.” Why this choice? Is it because each school year is just a slow descent into corruption and despair, like the journey of our Goodman Brown? Maybe for some, but that’s not the reason. It’s been awhile since I’ve posted! I was in Quebec studying French over the summer and have been rather busy all around. Von Daniken also unearths the intriguing story of a lost subterranean labyrinth in Ecuador that is said to be home to an extensive library of thousands of gold panels. After closely analyzing hundreds of ancient and apparently unrelated texts, he is now ready to proclaim that human history is nothing like the world religions claim-and he has the proof! In History is Wrong, Erich von Daniken takes a closer look at the fascinating Voynich manuscript, which has defied all attempts at decryption since its discovery, and makes some fascinating revelations about the equally incredible Book of Enoch. Erich von Daniken again shows his flair for revealing the truths that his contemporaries have missed. I'm usually available from 6 to 9 PM central time, weekends included. Many scholars consider The Night Land the main inspiration for the Dying Earth subgenre of science fiction. One fascinating trait about science fictional themes and subgenres is the feeling from reading older works is that later writers think, “That’s cool! But I can do better.” I believe people still read The Night Land because it inspires new visions of the end of time. The Night Land is a tale told by an unnamed narrator who lived millions of years in the future on an Earth in the perpetual night after the sun dies. I think hearing it rather than reading let me appreciate the archaic style Hodgson developed for telling his story. I had no trouble listening to an unabridged audiobook edition of the book that was just over eighteen hours long. However, The Night Land is one of those cult classics that have inspired a selective group of writers and readers. It is legendary for being difficult to read, and many consider it boring and tedious. The Night Land by William Hope Hodgson is not the kind of book you can recommend people rush out and buy. the stuff of epic tale telling."- Booklist "Compelling.
